AI can explain ideas, answer complex questions, and sound thoughtful. But that raises a deeper question: does it actually understand anything?
In this short spoken-word reflection, Sindy explores whether AI truly understands meaning or simply mirrors patterns of understanding it has learned from humans. When responses feel intelligent and insightful, the difference can be easy to miss.
This isn’t about fear or hype. It’s about asking what understanding really is.
SCRIPT:
AI can explain things.
Answer questions.
Even sound thoughtful.
But sometimes I wonder
what understanding actually means.
When a system responds correctly,
does that mean it understands —
or is it just reflecting patterns
it’s seen before?
Humans connect meaning to experience.
Memory.
Feeling.
Context.
AI doesn’t experience the world.
It recognizes structure.
And that makes me ask…
if something sounds like understanding,
feels like understanding,
and works like understanding…
does it matter
whether understanding is really there —
or are we responding
to our own reflection?
