Scarecrow Jesus Honored With Fire Department Medal After Mysterious Heroic Rescue

A realistic front cover of the Maple Creek Fire & Rescue Monthly newsletter for July 2026 featuring the headline "Scarecrow Jesus Receives Fire Department Medal of Valor." The cover's main photograph shows a local fire chief standing on a small step ladder carefully placing a Medal of Valor around the neck of Scarecrow Jesus, a life-sized roadside scarecrow with straw hands stretched straight out, a crown of thorns, weathered robes, and an inverted cross hanging from his chest. A row of smiling firefighters stand behind him applauding the ceremony while a fire engine is parked outside the station in the background. In the foreground, goth musician Sindy, recognizable by her long black twin ponytails with white scrunchies, black lipstick, dramatic eye makeup, and white crop top, smiles and applauds from the audience. The newsletter includes additional community stories about an open house, volunteer recruitment, a new fire engine, and fire prevention week, giving the publication the authentic appearance of a small-town fire department newsletter. The humorous cover story treats the impossible event completely seriously, reporting that authorities remain unable to explain how a motionless roadside scarecrow supposedly rescued three people from a burning building before being honored with the department's highest award.

Every small town has that one local story people swear is true. This month’s might be the best one yet.

The latest edition of Maple Creek Fire & Rescue Monthly features a headline nobody saw coming: Scarecrow Jesus has officially received the department’s Medal of Valor.

No witness actually claims to have seen Scarecrow Jesus move, yet somehow everyone agrees he deserves the recognition anyway.

According to local legend, three people escaped a burning building under circumstances that still can’t be explained. No witness actually claims to have seen Scarecrow Jesus move, yet somehow everyone agrees he deserves the recognition anyway. Sometimes a great story doesn’t need every question answered.

I love small-town newsletters because they always have a personality of their own, and this one might be my favorite yet. Between the fire safety tips, department updates, and a completely serious awards ceremony for a motionless roadside scarecrow, it’s exactly the kind of community spirit that makes me smile.

Congratulations, Scarecrow Jesus. You remain perfectly motionless… but apparently you’re also a decorated local hero.
